March in Sixth Class

30th Mar 2023

by Crystal & Katie

This month in sixth class…

In P.E we have been doing Gaelic training with Darragh every Friday. It’s been really good fun and we are all improving a lot. We have also been doing orienteering with Sara who taught us how to navigate our way around the school. We were put in groups and given maps and had a great time collecting all the different symbols around the school, we even had timed courses.

We have been working on our JEP project and have sent out our marketing surveys where we asked the pupils and their parents for their feedback to help us with our project. We have been drawing out graphs to represent this information and sent out order forms to those who wanted to buy one of our birdhouses. To boost our orders we have had two raffles of Easter Eggs. We currently have 102 orders, we are thrilled with this, thank you for your support.

In maths we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages.  We learned about the international time zones and have been drawing different types of graphs and charts in data.

In geography we learned about the bays, islands and headlands around the coast of Ireland.

In history we learned about feasts and festivals around the world. We learned about a festival called Diwali. This is also known as the festival of lights. It takes place in October or November. People wear new clothes and light diyas and candles in their gardens.

In science we learned about our environment and about how human waste can affect the wildlife and nature around us.

In music we learned some Irish dancing. We learned the songs Wild Rover, Peigin Leitir Mor and Óró sé do Bheatha Bhaile. For Seachtain na Gaeilge we had a Tráth na gCeist with 5th class. We also played lots of Tráth na gCeist Kahoots on the chromebooks.

Mr. Mulderrig, Ms. McTernan, Fergal Ó Múrchú and Kathrina O’Donnell put on a fabulous show for us for Seachtain na Gaeilge. Fergal told us all about the accordion and played some Spanish tunes for us. Mr. Mulderrig explained all about reels and jigs and Ms. McTernan taught us some lovely Irish songs. We had great craic with Kathrina learning the steps for the céilí.

For World Book Day we dressed as characters from books we liked and read with the junior infants. Mrs. McDonnell kindly brought in books from her own home and we were all allowed to take a book home with us to celebrate the day.

We went to mass every Wednesday for Lent and we made Fr. Towey a card to mark his 50th year as a priest. We are very thankful for all the work he does in St. John’s N.S.

We completed the Stay Safe Programme and hopefully now have learned the skills and language to keep ourselves safe going forward.

Today we had an Easter Hunt with Junior Infants. We had a ball. Ms. Marshall had made up clues and we were in groups bringing the Junior Infants on the hunt around the school grounds. At the end they came back to our classroom and we had a drink and a bar that Fr. Towey had given as a treat to us to help him celebrate the 50th anniversay of his ordination. It was yummy...Thanks  Fr. Towey. Ms. Marshall also had little Easter Eggs for us too.

We have had a really fun few weeks and can’t wait to do more fun things in sixth class after Easter!!!
